Promising rookie right-hander Drew Thorpe has been placed on the 15-day IL with a right forearm flexor strain. The move comes a day after he surrendered six earned runs on seven hits and two walks with no strikeouts over five innings in the Sox’ 10-3 home defeat to the Royals on Wednesday.

He reported feeling some soreness after his last two starts. Imaging came back negative for a UCL injury but did reveal a light flexor strain.

“I tried to pitch through it, but it started getting worse,” Thorpe said. “Images came back pretty good. So, just go from here, rehab it and hopefully get back in a couple weeks."

In a corresponding move, the team recalled right hander Prelander Berroa from Triple-A Charlotte.

“Really good news on Drew,” said White Sox manager Pedro Grifol before Friday’s game. “You never want to see a pitcher come out of a game and complain about some soreness; we were all concerned for a bit. But good news. He’ll be two, three weeks and hopefully, we can get him back in there.”

It's a setback for Thorpe, the crown jewel of the Dylan Cease deal with the San Diego Padres. Prior to his last two rough outings, he had made five straight quality starts.

"It [stinks] to go down,” Thorpe said. “Obviously, I want to pitch, so it's frustrating from that aspect. But this is part of it, so just kinda move on, try to get healthy and get back on the mound.”
