Dietrich (shoulder) on IL; O'Grady up for Reds

CINCINNATI -- The Reds placed Derek Dietrich on the 10-day injured list on Monday with left shoulder inflammation. Reds manager David Bell believes the shoulder has impacted Dietrich’s swing in recent games.

“It went from being a nuisance to being more of a stabbing [pain] in his shoulder,” said Bell. “It got to a point where he was trying to do everything he could to stay out there. I think it probably affected his swing.”

Dietrich has one hit in his last 16 at-bats, with 11 strikeouts, four walks and six hit by pitch.

The injury to Dietrich created an opportunity for Brian O’Grady, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Louisville on Monday after more than 1,800 at-bats in the Minor Leagues.

O’Grady, an eighth-round Draft choice by the Reds in 2014, batted .277 with 27 home runs and 70 RBIs at Triple-A, with a .351 on-base percentage.

“He’s had a nice year,” Bell said. “It’s a great opportunity for him. He has worked very hard to get to this point. He’s a great fit from a roster standpoint, losing the left-handed bat with Dietrich.”

Also on Monday, infielder Blake Trahan was designated for assignment.

Bauer, one year at a time

Trevor Bauer moved items into his locker at Great American Ball Park and addressed the local media for the first time on Monday. Bauer is still growing accustomed to his new surroundings after seven seasons with Cleveland, but he said the Reds have helped ease the transition.

“It’s been a little tough, just making sure I don’t miss anything, baseball-wise or life-wise,” Bauer said. “Everybody’s been super welcoming. They have made things super easy on me making the transition.”

Bauer made his Reds debut on Saturday, allowing three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, with three walks and four strikeouts. Bauer is scheduled to make his home debut against the Cubs on Friday night. He is 3-0 with an 0.46 ERA lifetime vs. Chicago.

In 25 starts this season, Bauer is 9-8 with a 3.85 ERA.

When asked about his future with Cincinnati, Bauer reverted to comments he had made previously about not agreeing to extended contracts. As for the Reds, Bauer said he’ll wait and see.

“I do intend to sign one-year contracts for the rest of my career,” the 28-year-old right-hander said. “I want to be on a contender. It’s all centered around winning. There is a buzz in the clubhouse about what [the Reds] have going on. [But] very hard to speak to that on my fourth or fifth day here.”
