Curse of the Bambino? Big Papi whiffs on gender reveal
One of the most imposing sluggers of all time, David Ortiz crushed 541 home runs during his Hall of Fame career. He was also a 10-time All-Star, seven-time Silver Slugger Award winner, 2013 World Series MVP and 2010 Home Run Derby champion.
So what better way to reveal the gender of his fourth child than by tossing him a pitch and letting him take one of his signature hacks at an exploding ball?
Unfortunately, Big Papi also sometimes struggled with high-and-tight offerings during his time in the big leagues -- and this celebratory pitch certainly qualified.
Settling into his iconic stance with friends and family gathered around, Ortiz suddenly found himself dealing with a little chin music. Though he attempted to open his stance and pull the ball to the right side, Ortiz whiffed as the ball landed harmlessly and rolled away -- without revealing anything.
The suspense ended quickly, however, as the other guests blasted blue confetti into the air to signify the baby is going to be a boy. In what had to be the happiest swing and miss of his life, Ortiz immediately began celebrating and embracing his loved ones.
