Resting Swanson now will help in long run

ATLANTA -- Dansby Swanson will not be with the Braves during their upcoming road trip, and he hasn't started to think about when he might be ready to return from the disabled list. But the Braves shortstop doesn't seem overly concerned about his sore left wrist.
"We just felt it was best to take the rest now and [make sure the wrist heals], so that we wouldn't have to deal with it for the whole year," Swanson said. "We want to nip it in the bud now and move forward."
Swanson is eligible to return from the disabled list on May 14. But he may need more than another week to fully recover. Before returning to the Braves' lineup, he will likely need to play in at least one Minor League rehab game.
"Honestly, I haven't even looked that far in advance," Swanson said. "I've really just tried to stay with the mindset of living right now and [taking things day to day]. Whenever I'm back, I'm back."
Johan Camargo will serve as the Braves' shortstop while Swanson remains on the disabled list.
Swanson has been out since aggravating his wrist while taking a swing during the fifth inning of Wednesday's win over the Mets. Initially, it was thought he might need just a few days of rest. But by late Friday afternoon, the Braves determined the shortstop would need at least a week to recover from what appears to be inflammation.

Multiple medical tests have shown Swanson's wrist is structurally sound. The discomfort that has increased over the past couple weeks seems to be a product of normal wear and tear.
Swanson has spent the past couple days undergoing treatment and doing whatever he can to not place any stress on his wrist.
"There's definitely been improvement," Swanson said. "Obviously when there is irritation with anything and you're constantly doing things, it's not going to get better as rapidly as it would if you just rest. Every athlete hates hearing that. But that's just how it is."
Swanson hit .358 with a .976 OPS through his first 16 games this season. But he has batted .191 with a .468 OPS over the 12 games that have followed.
Odds and Ends
• Right-handed reliever Luke Jackson was promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett and Lucas Sims was optioned back to Gwinnett before Sunday's series finale against the Giants. The Braves needed another fresh arm in their bullpen after Sims completed 3 2/3 innings during Saturday's loss.
• The Braves did not burn Preston Tucker's only remaining option when he was recalled from Gwinnett just a couple hours after being optioned on Friday. Tucker will maintain that option unless he spends 20 days in the Minors after being sent down at any point this season.
