KANSAS CITY -- Royals left-hander Danny Duffy was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Monday because of an impingement in his left shoulder. Right-hander Glenn Sparkman, who was sent back to Triple-A Omaha to make room for Blaine Boyer on Sunday, was recalled and will make a start in Duffy's place on Thursday.
Duffy had been feeling discomfort in his shoulder for three or four starts, he said, and he had an anti-inflammatory injection on Saturday night. Duffy said the pain was beginning to subside.
"It's just tendinitis," Duffy said. "If we were in [postseason] contention, I could fight my way through this, but there's no point in risking anything now."
