DETROIT -- Blue Jays outfielder Dalton Pompey will miss at least the next month after he was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb.
Pompey sustained the injury while sliding into third base during a game for Triple-A Buffalo on May 29. He has since been examined by a hand specialist and was informed that his thumb will need to be immobilized for the next three weeks.
Following the period of immobilization, Pompey will be re-evaluated to determine the next steps of his rehab. He's expected to be out until at least the start of July but an exact timeframe for his return will remain unknown until he is examined again towards the end of the month.
The injury is yet another unfortunate setback for the former top prospect, who has been sidelined with a wide variety of ailments over the last couple of years. Pompey missed the entire 2017 season after he sustained a concussion while playing for Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic, and later injuring his left knee while on a rehab assignment.
Pompey has appeared in five games for the Blue Jays this season and had a pair of hits in 10 at-bats. He was batting .275 with an .828 OPS in 18 games for Buffalo. Earlier this year, he dealt with a wrist injury that caused him to miss the start of the season.
Injury updates
• Buffalo shortstop Richard Ureña will be out for the next 7-to-10 days because of a laceration on his right middle finger. Urena was spiked during a game against Triple-A Charlotte and the cut required three stitches to repair.
• Blue Jays left fielder Steve Pearce has finally started a hitting progression. Pearce has begun to take dry swings, but it's still not clear when he will begin taking batting practice and there is no timetable for his return to the big league roster. Pearce has not played since May 3 because of a strained oblique muscle.
• Josh Donaldson, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday night with left calf tightness, is going through normal hitting and throwing routines. He will progress through running drills once he is determined to be asympomatic, as he expects to return to the Toronto lineup on Friday against Baltimore.

• Right-hander Marcus Stroman threw a bullpen session on Saturday morning for the first time since he was placed on the DL with right shoulder fatigue. Stroman is expected to require at least a couple of rehab starts before rejoining the Blue Jays, but it's not immediately clear when that process will begin.
• Bisons infielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is day to day with left hamstring tightness. He is not expected to require a stint on the DL.
