Cubs reportedly sign Bourjos to Minors deal

CHICAGO -- The Cubs have reportedly signed outfielder Peter Bourjos to a Minor League contract. The deal was not confirmed by the club.
Bourjos, who turns 31 in March, is expected to compete for a backup outfielder spot with the Cubs, who could use some insurance if projected starters Jason Heyward, Ben Zobrist or Kyle Schwarber are injured. Bourjos batted .223 in 100 games last season with the Rays and also has played for the Angels, Cardinals and Phillies over eight seasons. He has a career .241 batting average.
According to reports on Thursday, Bourjos would earn $1.45 million if he makes the team.
An Illinois native -- he was born in Park Ridge, Ill. -- the right-handed hitter signed as a free agent with the White Sox in January 2017 and was purchased by the Rays last March.
