Cubs place Darvish on 10-day DL with illness

CHICAGO -- The Cubs placed starter Yu Darvish on the 10-day disabled list on Monday, retroactive to last Friday, with a flu-like illness.
The Cubs said Darvish is sidelined with parainfluenza virus and was not feeling strong enough to pitch on Tuesday, which was his next scheduled start. By placing him on the DL now, he could be activated to start on May 14 in a makeup game against the Braves.
After Monday's 14-2 win over the Marlins, Cubs manager Joe Maddon did not announce Tuesday's starter, saying they may go with a bullpen day. However, the Cubs also could call up right-hander Jen-Ho Tseng, 23, from Triple-A Iowa. Tseng, who made his Major League debut last Sept. 14, has gone 0-4 with an 8.04 ERA in six starts this season in the Minors. He was a late scratch from Monday's Iowa game.

As for Darvish, Maddon said the right-hander had been feeling ill for a couple of days.
"It's one of those things where you don't know if he's going to start feeling better or not," Maddon said. "I talked to him before [Monday's] game and he still wasn't good."
Darvish, 31, is 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA in six starts with the Cubs this season.

Before the roster move, Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein was asked about Darvish's performance so far this year.
"He's really talented," Epstein said. "It's not like he's feeling anything physical. It's just getting him to a comfort zone and letting him play."
