No one was more surprised by the Braves' 11-10 comeback victory against the Mets on Friday night at Truist Park than the man who finished the job. Chris Martin didn’t even realize what had happened.
With closer Mark Melancon not available after pitching on Wednesday and Thursday, Martin worked a scoreless ninth to record his sixth career save and first since joining Atlanta at last year’s Trade Deadline. But his reaction showed he didn’t know he’d recorded the last out.
“He had no idea it was the ninth inning,” catcher Travis d’Arnaud said. “He thought it was the eighth. I was walking to the mound laughing the whole time and looking at the guys in the dugout. They were all pointing and laughing at him, too. He was just laughing about it. It was really funny.”
