Correa, Gurriel take home Gold Gloves

HOUSTON -- Astros shortstop Carlos Correa and first baseman Yuli Gurriel have been named Gold Glove Award winners at their positions in the American League, giving the Astros two winners for the first time since 2015. Correa and Gurriel are both first-time winners.
Correa, a free agent, led all Major League players in defensive WAR at 3.0, according to Baseball Reference. He led all AL shortstops in defensive runs saved with 21, according to Fangraphs, besting Andrelton Simmons (14) and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (11). Among AL shortstops, he ranked third in fielding percentage (.981), third in assists (384) and third in total chances (579). He joins Roger Metzger (1973) as the only shortstops to win Gold Gloves in club history.

Gurriel, who had his $8 million option for 2022 picked up by the club this week, led AL first basemen in assists (86). He also ranked tied for second in defensive runs saved (five), third in total chances (1,147), fifth in fielding percentage (.994) and fifth in double plays (95). He joins Jeff Bagwell (1994) as the only first basemen to win Gold Gloves in club history.
At 37 years old, Gurriel is the oldest first baseman to win a Gold Glove, surpassing Vic Power in 1964.
The last time the Astros had two Gold Glove winners was 2015, with second baseman Jose Altuve and pitcher Dallas Keuchel. Keuchel (2018), who won his fifth Gold Glove this year with the White Sox, was the last Astros pitcher to win a Gold Glove prior to this season.
