What to know about the Cardinals-Brewers game
After wowing the league with elite velocity and precision over his first 12 outings in 2016, Reyes is making his first appearance since the end of that season after undergoing Tommy John surgery last February. The 23-year-old is the Cards' No. 1 prospect and No. 16 overall, per MLB Pipeline.
Exercising caution, St. Louis allotted Reyes an extra month of rehab work to prepare for a return to a rotation that has already weathered attrition to Carlos Martínez (right lat strain) and Adam Wainwright (right elbow), and has marginal uncertainty about how it will stagger its unit once Martinez returns. Reyes has been as advertised in his Minor League rehab work, throwing 23 scoreless innings over four starts, with 44 strikeouts.
"I never had doubt in myself," Reyes said recently. "I always told myself I'd be able to get back to where I was."
Reyes is squaring off against right-hander Junior Guerra and an impressive Brewers club that set a franchise milestone for their best 50-game start. Guerra is coming off an effective outing against the Mets last Friday in which he manuevered through six innings on 72 pitches before manager Craig Counsell opted to turn to his bullpen, which has been arguably the Majors' best.
These clubs are among a quartet that sit above .500 in the NL Central.
