ST. LOUIS -- Seven decades of Cardinals players will be represented at the annual St. Louis Baseball Writers' Dinner, which will celebrate its 60th anniversary by recognizing the organization's top players from the last several decades.
The dinner, which raises money for scholarships and a journalism internship, is scheduled for Jan. 14, 2018, at the Union Station Hotel in downtown St. Louis. The event falls during the Cardinals' Winter Warm-Up weekend, and tickets are on sale now at StLouisBBWAA.com. They range in price from $150-$250.
The St. Louis chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association selected the players and managers to be honored as "Cardinals of the Decade" at the 2018 dinner. The honorees will include the oldest living Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst (1950s), as well as current Cardinals Adam Wainwright (2010s) and Yadier Molina (2010s).
Others who have confirmed plans to be in attendance include Bob Gibson (1960s), Mike Shannon (1960s), Ted Simmons (1970s), Lou Brock (1970s), Keith Hernandez (1970s), Willie McGee (1980s), Bruce Sutter (1980s), Whitey Herzog (1980s), Tony La Russa (1990s), Ray Lankford (1990s), Mark McGwire (1990s) and Chris Carpenter (2000s). The attendance of additional honorees will be announced at a later date.
While a journey through the last 60 years of Cardinals baseball will be the highlight of the dinner, several other honors will also be awarded that evening.
The Red Schoendienst Medal will be presented to Gibson to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his first Cy Young Award season and recognize his "invaluable service to the game of baseball." Cardinals outfielder Tommy Pham will be honored as the J.G. Taylor Spink St. Louis Baseball Man of the Year, while Paul DeJong will receive the Herman/Ostermeier Award as the 2017 club's Rookie of the Year.
The St. Louis BBWAA chapter will present the Lou Brock Award to Miami's Dee Gordon, who led the National League with 60 stolen bases last season, and a Silver Slugger Award to Wainwright, who was voted as the top hitting pitcher in the NL.
