Brewers lose Cain to DL with groin strain

MILWAUKEE -- After missing his first game in more than a month on Sunday, Lorenzo Cain now faces a longer absence. The Brewers placed their center fielder and leadoff hitter on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a left groin strain.
The Brewers recalled outfielder Keon Broxton from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take Cain's spot.
Cain leads the National League in bWAR at 3.9 entering Tuesday's play, but he was banged up during the Brewers' four-game series with the Cardinals over the weekend. Cain left Thursday's game with cramping in his right hamstring, was hit on the elbow with a pitch Friday and was hit by another pitch and left with a groin tweak Saturday. The Brewers opted to put him on the DL after he was still feeling pain despite two days of treatment.
"This is part of a baseball season," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "You have to be equipped to handle losses. I think we are. That's been a strength of this team so far, and how we've gotten to this point.
"… I really believe this is a short-term thing for Lorenzo. Something we can withstand and still win baseball games during it."

Counsell held Cain out of the lineup on Sunday for the first time since May 23 in an effort to get him an extended break with Monday's off-day. He is hitting .291 with eight homers and 26 RBIs in his first year playing in Milwaukee since his rookie season in 2010. The Brewers opened an Interleague series with Cain's former team, the Royals, on Tuesday.
Broxton is back in the Majors for the first time since last season, when he hit for a .220 average in 143 games and was one of nine players with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases.
Cain's DL assignment was retroactive to Sunday, so he will be eligible for reinstatement beginning July 4.
Shaw sidelined, too
While Cain hit the DL on Tuesday, the Brewers remained hopeful that third baseman and cleanup hitter Travis Shaw will avoid a similar fate.
Shaw, homerless in his last 54 plate appearances, has been dealing with a right wrist injury since the Brewers-Phillies series at Miller Park from June 8-10. He was forced out of Sunday's game after aggravating his wrist, and said he expected to sit out both games against the Royals before reassessing the situation on Thursday.
"If we're not ready Thursday, they'll probably go a different route," Shaw said.
The Brewers' medical staff contemplated a DL stint last week, according to Shaw, when he missed a game against the Pirates with the same issue.
"I'll be a little more realistic this time," he said. "I don't want it to keep nagging. It's affecting my swing a little bit, too. It's been hard to 'let it go' for like two weeks now."
Logan released
Unable to find a trade partner for left-handed reliever Boone Logan since designating him for assignment one week earlier, the Brewers announced Tuesday they released the veteran.
Logan is now free to sign with any team and the Brewers are on the hook for the remainder of his salary. He had a 5.91 ERA in 16 appearances and yielded nine hits, including five for extra bases, in 22 at-bats by left-handed hitters.
Last call
• Before recently acquired Brad Miller made his first Brewers start at shortstop on Tuesday, injured infielder Tyler Saladino tested his sprained left ankle running the bases. He's expected to depart for a Minor League rehab assignment sometime during the Brewers' upcoming four-game series in Cincinnati, and should be ready for reinstatement five to seven days after that, Counsell said.
• Right-hander Zach Davies (shoulder) is scheduled to make his next -- and what could be his final -- rehab start on Friday, Counsell said. Davies told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he will pitch with Class A Wisconsin this time.
• Reliever Matt Albers, also sidelined by a right shoulder injury, played catch for the first time Tuesday since hitting the disabled list during the Brewers' last homestand. The Brewers don't expect Albers back to active duty until after the All-Star break.
