SAN DIEGO -- After Adam Duvall provided brief hope, Fernando Tatis Jr. ensured the Braves would not strengthen their postseason bid by winning a game that had been suspended in Atlanta more than two months ago.

Tatis’ seventh-inning leadoff homer against Will Smith proved decisive as the Braves suffered a 6-5 loss in the completion of a suspended game on Friday night at Petco Park. This was the completion of a seven-inning game that was halted because of rain on July 21 at Truist Park.

Box score

Smith had allowed just one previous home run in September, but opponents have now totaled seven home runs as he has posted a 5.12 ERA over his past 20 appearances (19 1/3 innings).

With the loss, the Braves were unable to strengthen their lead over the Phillies in the National League East. They will attempt to do so when Max Fried starts the nine-inning game scheduled against the Padres on Friday night.

The seven-inning, suspended game resumed with the Padres leading 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth. The Braves, who remained the home team despite the venue change, tied the game when Duvall homered with one out in the sixth. This increased Duvall’s home run total to 38, but it will officially go down as his 22nd because he entered July 21 with 21 homers.

Duvall, Eddie Rosario and Jorge Soler were all inserted into this game, which began nine days before they were acquired on the July 30 Trade Deadline.
