TORONTO -- Blue Jays second baseman Devon Travis is expected to be out for "a while" after undergoing a procedure Monday on his injured right knee.
Travis landed on the 10-day disabled list on June 6 with a bone bruise in his knee. Manager John Gibbons said the procedure, done in New York, was to "clean up" the cartilage, and added there is no timetable for Travis' return at this early stage.
After a slow start to his season, Travis had turned things around since the beginning of May and emerged as one of Toronto's most consistent hitters. In his 29 games since May 1, Travis hit .352 with four home runs, 16 doubles and a .974 OPS.
With Travis out, Gibbons plans to platoon Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney at second for the immediate future.
Notes
• Left fielder Steve Pearce has moved to Triple-A Buffalo as he continues to work back from a strained left calf. Pearce enters play on Tuesday 0-for-15 during his rehab assignment.
"I'd expect he'd be back by this weekend," Gibbons said.
The Blue Jays have the day off Thursday after a two-game series against the Rays, then welcome the White Sox to town for three games beginning Friday.
• Aaron Sanchez was scheduled to throw a long-toss session on Tuesday off flat ground. Gibbons said he expects the right-hander to get back on a mound over the "next couple of days."
"He'll probably go to Texas with us so he can be with the pitching coach to throw his sides," Gibbons said.
Sanchez is expected to be sent on a rehab assignment before making a return from his third trip to the disabled list this season.
• Outfielder Dalton Pompey had his rehab from a concussion delayed June 4 when he left his first Triple-A game with a knee injury. The 24-year-old is making progress, Gibbons said, but a return date has not been given.
