Here’s a subjective ranking of the top five for July 10:
1. Andre Dawson (1954)
Dawson was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010 as just the second player in AL/NL history with at least 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases. The outfielder played 21 seasons for the Expos, Cubs, Red Sox and Marlins from 1976-96. His accolades include the '77 National League Rookie of the Year Award, the '87 NL Most Valuable Player Award, eight All-Star selections, eight Gold Glove Awards, four Silver Slugger Awards and the '87 Home Run Derby title. Dawson slashed .279/.323/.482 with a 64.8 bWAR.

2. Hal McRae (1945)
McRae’s Major League career spanned 19 seasons as a member of the Reds and Royals. It was with Kansas City where earned a trio of All-Star nods, captured the 1982 Silver Slugger Award and won the ‘85 World Series. McRae, who was a designated hitter in 1,426 of his 2,084 games, slashed .290/.351/.454. He went on to manage the Royals (1991-94) and Rays (2001-02).
3. Will Smith (1989)
Smith was on the mound to close out the World Series for his hometown Braves in 2021, and he went on to win the World Series with the Astros in '22 and again with the Rangers in '23. The lefty reliever began his career playing for Kansas City, and he suited up for Milwaukee and San Francisco before signing with the Braves as a free agent in November of 2019. Smith tossed 11 scoreless innings, including six saves, in the '21 title run. The Braves traded Smith to the Astros in 2022, and he went on to sign with the Rangers prior to the 2023 season. He then inked a deal to return to the Royals in 2024.
4. Dick Lundy (1898)
Lundy won the 1932 East-West League batting title with a .381 average. With a .331/.394/.477 slash line, he earned two All-Star selections while playing 12 seasons for the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants, Baltimore Black Sox, Pittsburgh Crawfords, Newark Dodgers, New York Cubans and Newark Eagles. Lundy also was 303-259 as a player-manager and manager.
5. Gene Alley (1940)
Alley played his entire 11-year career with the Pirates, including the 1971 World Series team. He also has two All-Star selections and a pair of Gold Glove Awards on his resume. Alley led all shortstops in double plays turned in back-to-back seasons ('66-67).

Others to note:
Jelly Taylor (1910)
Taylor earned three consecutive All-Star selections from 1939-41. The lefty first baseman was a member of the Cincinnati Tigers and Memphis Red Sox of the Negro Leagues during his nine-year career. He also managed Memphis for one season.
Marty Cordova (1969)
Cordova began his nine-year career by being named the 1995 AL Rookie of the Year, when he hit 24 homers with the Twins. The left fielder also played for Toronto, Cleveland and Baltimore.
