Bartolo Colon is taking talents to Mexico
There hasn't been much that has stuck around since 1994. Grunge music has mostly died out. "Friends" only lasted until 2004. Frosted tips? You just shouldn't do that anymore. Don't do that.
But one man, one baseball player, has been playing some form of pro ball since the '94 season. And he'll continue doing so in 2021.
Colon began his professional career with the Appalachian League's Burlington Indians 27 years ago. He spent 21 years in the Majors -- putting up a Latin-American record 247 wins, making four All-Star Games and taking home the 2005 AL Cy Young Award. The 47-year-old last pitched in MLB for the Rangers in 2018, putting up a sub-par 7-12 record and 5.78 ERA. He did have some bright spots, though, including nearly pitching a perfect game against the reigning world champion Astros and spearing a 100-mph line drive with his stomach.
Colon actually signed with Acereros de Monclava last season, but the Mexican Baseball League never started up due to Covid-19. The Acereros won the league title in 2019 -- led by former big leaguer Chris Carter's 49 homers. If the roster stays the same from that year, Colon will join a team full of former MLBers including Carter, Eric Young Jr., Erick Aybar, Francisco Rodriguez, Al Alburquerque and 45-year-old baserunning extraordinaire Ruben Rivera. Time will tell whether the Acereros choose to use Colon as a pitcher or a hitter.
