In and out: Meadows' glove helps Peralta's HR

PHOENIX -- D-backs outfielder David Peralta recorded his 500th career hit and his 12th home run of the season in the first inning of Wednesday afternoon's 5-4 loss to the Pirates at Chase Field, but he got an assist on it by left fielder Austin Meadows.
With two outs and Jon Jay at first, Peralta lifted a deep fly to left. Meadows was backing up onto the warning track as he reached up to catch the ball.
The ball ticked off Meadows' glove and went into the stands for a two-run homer as he bounced off the wall.
"It was a ball that could have been caught," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. "But listen, a home run is a home run, and I know David was excited about it. He hit the ball very well."
It was not clear at first what had happened until Meadows showed that he did not have the ball in his glove; after that, Peralta and pitcher Jameson Taillon reacted.
"I thought I had it, then I looked at my glove and it wasn't there," Meadows said. "Then I heard the fans cheering, and I was like, 'What?' Then I looked at my glove, and I was like, 'OK, that makes sense now.' … I thought it was in there. It's just one of those weird, unlucky things."
