OAKLAND -- Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon sustained a triceps injury while making a diving play at third base in the fifth inning of Monday’s 8-5 loss to the A’s.

Angels manager Joe Maddon didn’t have much of an update after the game, as Rendon was still being evaluated. It’s still too early to know if the injury will require a stint on the 10-day injured list. If so, it would be the third time this season for Rendon, who has also missed time with a strained left groin and a left knee contusion. He sustained the injury making a diving attempt on a ball hit to left field from Chad Pinder for an RBI double.

“On the dive, he felt something in his triceps, but I don’t know which one,” Maddon said. “He didn’t feel it necessarily when it occurred, but when he came back to the dugout. So I’m waiting to hear what everybody thinks.”

Kean Wong replaced Rendon at third base in the sixth with the Angels trailing by seven runs. They eventually made it a three-run game with a four-run seventh inning.

Losing Rendon would be a blow to the Angels, who are already without superstar Mike Trout. Trout is expected to be out roughly another month with a right calf strain. Rendon, who is coming off a solid series against the D-backs, is off to a slow start by his standards, slashing .241/.314/.365 with four homers and 30 RBIs in 45 games.

“All I know is he didn’t feel it when he dove,” Maddon said. “He came in and brushed himself a little bit and that’s when he felt something. The [trainers] told me they would get back to me soon.”
