Angels' series finale vs. Yankees rained out
NEW YORK -- The Angels' scheduled game against the Yankees was postponed due to inclement weather on Thursday and will be made up on Aug. 16 at Yankee Stadium.
Right-hander Griffin Canning was slated to start, but he will now be pushed back to start the series opener against the Orioles at Angel Stadium on Friday. He'll be followed in the rotation by righty Alex Cobb on Saturday and lefty Patrick Sandoval on Sunday.
Left-hander José Suarez was scheduled to make his first start of the season on Sunday, but he will now take the mound on Monday against the Red Sox. Suarez is set to replace veteran right-hander Dylan Bundy, who is headed to the bullpen.
Suarez, 23, has excelled in the bullpen, posting a 1.98 ERA with 26 strikeouts, nine walks and three homers allowed in 27 1/3 innings. His last outing came on Monday against the Yankees, when he allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings in relief of Bundy, who left his start because of heat exhaustion after 1 2/3 innings. Bundy made his first relief appearance on Wednesday, throwing two scoreless frames to lower his ERA to 6.58 in 67 innings this year.
"Dylan's been struggling a bit, although he looked really good last night," Angels manager Joe Maddon said. "We're just looking for him to find a few things he's done in the past. It couldn't have been a better conversation. He's so accountable. He just has to look at the big picture. It just seems like the right time to give Suarez and opportunity and allow Dylan a chance to reset. And who knows how it'll play out the rest of the year."
Suarez, though, is expected to get more than one start, as he'll be a regular member of the rotation for now.
"He's got an opportunity right now," Maddon said. "As far as pitch count, we've got him as high as 60. So I don't think 80 is unrealistic his next time out -- and he's pitch efficient. So even if it's five [innings] and 75, I'll take it. And then he can build from there. But everybody's been really impressed."
