Vasquez has rough '19 debut after being recalled

NEW YORK -- The Twins announced Wednesday that they recalled left-hander Andrew Vasquez from Triple-A Rochester and optioned right-hander Chase De Jong to Rochester.

Vasquez made one appearance for the Red Wings this season and didn’t allow a run in 1 1/3 innings. This is his second stint with the club. He entered Wednesday's 9-6 loss to the Mets in the fifth inning and couldn’t retire a batter.

Vasquez hit Brandon Nimmo with a pitch, scoring Amed Rosario. Pete Alonso followed and he drew another walk scoring J.D. Davis. Vasquez couldn’t throw a strike when Robinson Cano came to the plate. Cano walked on four pitches, scoring Noah Syndergaard.

“I wanted to attack, get the out and get out of the jam,” Vasquez said. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my stuff today. … I’m ready to get back out there as soon as I can and compete.”

As for De Jong, he came out of bullpen for the Twins on Tuesday and was hit hard, allowing four runs in one inning against the Mets. It was his first appearance of the season.

Manager Rocco Baldelli said all De Jong needed was a chance to pitch on a regular basis.

“We didn’t pitch him very much,” Baldelli said. “When we spoke, he was a guy who said I need to pitch better than I pitched. I respect that greatly. But I can look at him and say he needs to go out there and get innings and get in a routine like we talked about. Once we get in a comfortable place, start to throw, start to make regular appearances, I think we are going to see a different guy.”
