Garrett exits with mild Achilles strain

CINCINNATI -- Reds reliever Amir Garrett did a nice job of getting to first base on Odúbel Herrera's one-out grounder to Joey Votto in the fifth inning during the Reds' 6-4 win over the Phillies. Garrett barely beat the speedy Herrera to the bag for the out, but fell down in the process.
Garrett was looked over by assistant trainer Tomas Vera, before taking two warm-up tosses. He then exited the game and David Hernandez took over with the Reds leading 5-3. Garrett was diagnosed with a mild left Achilles strain. X-rays were negative and he is currently day to day.
"He got a big out for us there," Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said. "Him and Joey made a nice play. I wanted him to continue on for quite a bit there. Next thing you know, we're using our bullpen pretty heavy because we had to get Amir out of there."
Riggleman had just shown a quick hook in lifting starter Anthony DeSclafani after back-to-back one-out singles in the fifth, including Rhys Hoskins' RBI hit that scored Jorge Alfaro. Riggleman had the left-handed Garrett face the lefty-hitting Herrera.
Hernandez was able to get the first hitter he faced, Carlos Santana, to pop out in foul territory near the visiting dugout to get out of the Phillies' half of the fifth inning. Hernandez went on to pitch 2 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.
Without Garrett, the Reds have one other lefty reliever available in Wandy Peralta after he was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Friday afternoon. Also at Louisville, the organization has former lefty starter Brandon Finnegan working as a reliever, but he has struggled in that role since moving to the bullpen in late June.
