With Deadline near, what might AL West do?

With the July 31 Trade Deadline less than a week away, several marquee players could be wearing different uniforms in the coming days. The Astros lead the American League West by 7 1/2 games, but the second-place A’s and third-place Angels are still in the playoff hunt and could be looking to add something to help put them over the top.

Here’s a team-by-team look at how each club in the AL West is shaping up heading into the Trade Deadline.

Houston Astros

What they need: "They definitely could use another starter. That’s no secret. They have a dominating starting pitching staff led by Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole. They have power arms on the back side of the game. The rotation drops off quite a bit after Wade Miley[Wade]. That’s definitely the biggest thing they need to address. You take away some of their big arms and maybe they go down a level or two as fourth or fifth starter. But they are pretty well-rounded."

Who they might move: "Their farm system isn’t as deep as some think as far as the kind of big-time talent that other teams would want. Most of those guys are probably untouchable, anyway, like [Forrest] Whitley or [Kyle] Tucker [ranked as the Astros' No. 1 and No. 2 prospects, respectively, per MLB Pipeline. They might have to bite the bullet and deal one of those guys to get what they want."

What they can get: "I see [Marcus Stroman] as a good fit here. He’s a bulldog who would fit in well in this rotation and guys like Verlander. But another lefty would balance out the rotation pretty good."

Los Angeles Angels

What they need: "Maybe they need more depth on the mound but at the same time. [they] have had some young guys come up and done a good job and filled in. [Matt] Harvey was a roll of the dice that didn’t work. Trevor Cahill[Trevor] has been a disappointment, too. Losing [Tyler] Skaggs will be tough in a lot of ways."

Who they might move: "That’s tough. There’s enough there you don’t want to hurt the big league club. It’s a talented club. It’s going to take some prospects to get what they want. The big thing is everyone wants arms. They might have to overpay. Tough spot."

What they can get: "I’m still not buying them as a contender you have to watch out for. Houston and Oakland are clearly better in the division. Which is why I think any deal will be for someone they can keep for a while. Maybe Robbie Ray. No way [GM Billy] Eppler gets a rental. I just don’t see them going all-in this year."

Oakland Athletics

What they need: "With Frankie Montas[Frankie] out [on an 80-game suspension], I don’t see their Verlander or Cole at the top. Homer Bailey[Homer] isn’t a bad addition, but he’s not a top guy. So they could use a starting pitcher, but that’s a long line to stand in. I could see them adding a reliever with the way Blake Treinen[Blake] has struggled. Yusmeiro Petit[Yusmeiro] is their best reliever now."

Who they might move: "There’s enough prospects on the farm to get somebody that could help them right now in terms of pitching. A.J. Puk should be in their rotation next year so I don’t see him going anywhere."

What they can get: "I see [executive vice president of baseball operations Billy Beane] swinging for the fences. He’s been known to make an impact move or two. Everyone wants pitching. They’re going to be in the mix for the big guys."

Seattle Mariners

What they need: "They’ve made it clear they’re open for business, but they don’t have many overly interesting pieces right now. Most of their interesting guys are on the injured list, so that doesn’t help.”

Who they might move: "Anybody who can bring something of value for the future, but that group is limited since they already dealt Edwin Encarnación[Edwin] and Jay Bruce[Jay]. Mike Leake might help somebody as a back-of-the-rotation guy and everybody is looking for bullpen help, so Roenis Elías[Roenis] is another they could move, though he’s been pretty inconsistent. Domingo Santana's bat is intriguing. but you have to figure out how he fits defensively."

What they can get: "Unless they’re willing to eat a lot of money on Leake or Dee Strange-Gordon's contracts, there’s a limited market on all those guys and I wouldn’t expect a big return."

Texas Rangers

What they need: "They’ve fallen apart here lately, but at least they can deal some guys and try to get some prospects. It seemed like they were going to be in the thick of it heading into August. It was false hope or whatever you want to call it. Maybe they can benefit from a fire sale now."

Who they might move: "They have to deal Mike Minor[Mike]. They could get a haul for him. He’d look good in everybody’s rotation. If I’m J.D. [GM Jon Daniels], I’m listening to offers for Hunter Pence[Hunter], Danny Santana[Danny] and even the big righty Lance Lynn[Lance]. I mean, they don’t want to gut the team heading to a new ballpark, but they’re not going to contend in the division next year no matter what, you know?"

What they can get: "They need young arms, even if they’re a couple [of years away]. That’s why they went out and signed Minor and Lynn. Those worked out, but they need to develop some guys. If I’m Daniels, I’m asking for pitching prospects."
