NEW YORK -- Following Saturday's loss to the Yankees, the Rays placed infielder Christian Arroyo on the 10-day disabled list because of a left oblique strain and reinstated shortstop Adeiny Hechavarría from the 10-day DL. Hechavarria missed almost a month of action because of a right hamstring strain.
Arroyo last played Friday against the Yankees and went 0-for 3 with two strikeouts. If the injury doesn't improve, Arroyo will have an MRI.
"The injury crept up in his first at-bat on [Friday]," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "He tried to manage himself through it. Being a young player, and we know how those work, you try to fight through it and you make it worse. It made the most sense to put him on the DL."
Hechavarria, meanwhile, started against the Yankees on Sunday in his return. However, going forward Willy Adames will be the everyday shortstop, with Hechavarria likely coming off the bench. Hechavarria is one veteran who could potentially be traded before the non-waiver Trade Deadline.
Entering Sunday's action against the Yankees, Hechavarria was hitting .273 with two home runs and 16 RBIs in 36 games. He was on a rehab assignment through Friday and went 1-for-2 with two walks for Triple-A Durham.
Hechavarria was scheduled to play for Durham on Saturday. He was taking batting practice when he received the word that he was going back to the big leagues.
