Nola named finalist for NL Cy Young Award

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies ace Aaron Nola established himself as one of baseball's best pitchers last season.
The Baseball Writers' Association of America recognized Nola's rise, announcing Monday night that he is one of the top three finishers for the National League Cy Young Award. Nola, 25, went 17-6 with a 2.37 ERA in 33 starts. He tied Mets ace Jacob deGrom in WAR (10.0), according to Baseball Reference. He ranked fourth in the league in WAR (5.6), according to FanGraphs. Nola struck out 224 batters in 212 1/3 innings.

No homegrown Phillies pitcher has ever won a Cy Young Award. Steve Carlton (1972, '77, '80 and '82), John Denny ('83), Steve Bedrosian ('87) and Roy Halladay (2010) each won the award while pitching for Philadelphia.

Nationals ace Max Scherzer and deGrom join Nola as the other top finishers. The winner will be announced on MLB Network beginning at 6 p.m. ET on Nov. 14.
deGrom is considered the favorite to win the award. He went 10-9 with a 1.70 ERA in 32 starts for the Mets. He had a 216 adjusted ERA and a 1.98 FIP. He struck out 269 batters in 217 innings. Scherzer went 18-7 with a 2.53 ERA in 33 starts. He struck out 330 batters in 220 2/3 innings.
