A's to host Cesar Chavez Day on March 31
The A's will host Cesar Chavez Day on March 31 in honor of the civil rights and labor movement activist, the club announced Friday.
The club will host more than 200 members of the Chavez family along with community leaders and nonprofit organizations at the celebration, which will take place prior to the A's 1:05 p.m. PT game against the Angels.
Cesar's sisters, Rita and Eduwieges Chavez, and his nephew Rudy Medina-Chavez will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The A's will also honor Chavez with an outdoor billboard in Oakland's Fruitvale district.
Chavez's legacy has strong ties to the Oakland, dating back to when he began organizing in the area in the 1950s. Cesar Chavez Day was proclaimed a U.S. federal commemorative holiday by President Barack Obama in 2014.
