The A's are getting their top pitcher back. Sonny Gray, who is set to make his 2017 debut on Tuesday against the Twins in Minnesota, was activated from the 10-day disabled list Monday, the team announced.
Gray hasn't yet pitched for Oakland this season because of a strained right lat that landed him on the DL at the end of March. He made two rehab appearances in the Minors and threw 11 scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts and no walks.
It's been an injury-plagued past year-plus for Gray since he finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting in 2015 after going 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA. He was limited to 22 starts last year, during which he had a 5.69 ERA and was on and off the DL -- first with a strained right trapezius, then with a right forearm strain.
In a corresponding move Monday to make room for Gray on their roster, the A's optioned outfielder Ryan LaMarre to Triple-A Nashville. LaMarre, who was acquired from the Angels on April 23, made three appearances for the A's, including two starts in center field.
