1917 World Series recap

Eddie Cicotte, master of freak deliveries such as the shine ball and the knuckleball, started for the White Sox in the opener, and out-dueled New York's Slim Sallee, 2-1. Giants ace Ferdie Schupp -- 21-7 with a 1.95 ERA in the regular season -- started Game 2, but the White Sox were apparently not impressed, knocking out Schupp in the second inning. They would later score five times in the fourth on their way to an easy, 7-2 victory behind the complete-game pitching of Red Faber.

The World Series shifted to New York for Game 3, and the home club got on the board thanks to Rube Benton's five-hit shutout, both Giants runs coming in the fourth. Schupp, treated so roughly in Game 2, game back in Game 4 to record a shutout of his own, scattering seven Sox hits to beat Faber, 5-0.

Two days later in Chicago, the White Sox trailed 5-2 in Game 5 as they came to bat in the seventh. But they tied the game on Chick Gandil's two-run double and an unearned run moments later, and posted another three-spot in the eighth for an 8-5 triumph. Faber picked up his second World Series win with two innings of perfect relief work.

Another trip back to New York meant another travel day, allowing Faber to make his third start of the World Series. And he was equal to the challenge, allowing just six Giants hits and two runs while going the distance in Game 6. His teammates in the lineup, meanwhile, scored three times in the fourth -- Chick Gandil smacked a two-run single and the Giants fielded shoddily -- and added an insurance run in the ninth, making the final 4-2 and finishing off the Giants to capture the World Series championship. The New York Giants had suffered their fourth straight World Series defeat.
