Call it clutch, call it luck, call it destiny, call it Wilmer Flores: It doesn't matter what it's called, for when the Mets infielder steps to the box with the game on the line, he tends to pull through.
He did it again in the Mets' 4-3 victory in the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Phillies. Leading off the bottom of the 10th inning, the SNY broadcasters seemed to know what was coming as they continued to refer to his past game-winning exploits with the Mets.
It almost didn't come to pass, though, as Flores was nearly hit by Víctor AranoVì's 2-1 pitch. The Mets made a replay appeal and, fortunately this time, lost. One pitch later, Flores bashed the pitch off the right-field foul pole to end the game.
Clearly, Flores wasn't too stressed as he was here to chew bubble gum and hit game-winning dingers.
"Some guys just step up in those situations, so it's good to have him on the bench," manager Mickey Callaway said after the game.
Meanwhile, Zack Wheeler echoed what every Mets fan was thinking." "It's almost getting to a point where you expect it," Wheeler said. "When the games on the line, that's the guy you want to have up there."u1:p

For the curious, this was Flores' 10th walk-off hit for the Mets, breaking a tie with David Wright for the most by a Mets player all time. This was also his fourth walk-off homer since 2015 -- you know, the year when Flores hit one of the most emotional home runs ever -- tying him with everyone's favorite trade target, Manny Machado, for the most in baseball:
