Two Giants Minor Leaguers pulled off the cycle ... in the same game
While all four-hit games are special, there is something eminently satisfying about the cycle. They're fairly rare, too. Last year, there were eight cycles across the six-month MLB season, and that was a particularly large number of them.
How would you like to see two in a single game? That's what happened when the San Jose Giants -- the Class A Advanced affiliate of, you guessed it, the Giants -- took on a Rockies farm team, the Lancaster Jethawks, on Wednesday night.
With a triple in the eighth inning, Gio Brusa picked up his cycle -- the first in San Jose history since Thomas Neal pulled it off in 2009. Given this photo it was incredibly fitting:
The wait for the next one wasn't very long: Jalen Miller tripled in the ninth inning for his.
Not only is the cycle incredibly rare, this was likely the only time that two players cycled in the same game. MiLB.com's Tyler Maun found that two players cycling on the same day happened only twice: Sept. 17, 1920, when Bobby Veach of the Detroit Tigers and George Burns of the New York Giants pulled it off, and Sept. 1, 2008, when the D-backs' Stephen Drew and the Mariners' Adrián Beltré accomplished it.
Of course, with this game taking place in the high offensive environment that is Lancaster in the California League, there were plenty of hits to go around. San Jose rapped out 25 hits in their 18-6 victory.
