What you should watch in the postseason race today: Michael Fulmer chases AL ROY honors
With only 10 days left in the season, every game has the potential to alter the postseason picture. As we enter the final days of the stretch run, we'll spotlight the biggest moments that we know you won't want to miss.
Royals at Tigers - 7:10 pm ET
After their doubleheader sweep on Thursday, the Tigers are in sole possession of the second American League Wild Card spot, and are a half-game up on the Orioles. But Detroit's postseason push won't be the only chase at stake when the reigning World Series champions come to Comerica Park: Michael Fulmer will take the mound, looking to elevate his claim to the AL's Rookie of the Year honors.
While the Yankees' rookie catcher and dinger machineGary Sánchez entered the league on Fire in August, Fulmer has been a stable presence in the Tigers' rotation since April, pitching 148 2/3 innings with a 3.03 ERA. September, however, has not been kind: Fulmer sports an inflated 5.50 ERA in the month, which included a loss to the Royals on Sept. 3.
He's been better against Kansas City overall this season, though, with a 2.75 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings. If he can put in a strong start on Friday, his ROY hopes -- and the Tigers' postseason aspirations -- might be well within reach.
You can watch Fulmer take on the Royals on MLB.TV, now only $3.99 for the remainder of the season.
