José Fernández tragically passed away in a boating accident near the end of last season. The entire baseball community mourned for the electric, incredibly talented 24-year-old, but not many felt the pain like his Marlins teammates. Dee Strange-Gordon, if you remember, paid the ultimate tribute in the team's first game back:
And for the Marlins' Opening Day game against the Nationals on Monday, Gordon recognized his fallen friend once again. Under Armour presented the second baseman with some amazing Jose Fernandez-inspired cleats:
As you can see in the Instagram post, Dee was honored to lace up his new shoes:
"I am truly blown away by these shoes and every pair I get to wear this year. ... thank you guys so much for this genuine act of kindness in helping me remember my teammate. #JDF16"
MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports that Gordon has worn different footwear for the three previous Opening Days, but this one had to feel even more special. The Marlins will also be wearing a No. 16 patch on their jerseys throughout the year.
