This college league team's new nickname is bananas -- no, seriously, it's actually Bananas
Have you ever looked at the landscape of Minor League team names and wondered where all the fruit was? Have you ever looked at a baseball bat and thought, "Hm, what if that were a banana?" Are you intrigued and/or confused by the specificity of these questions? Congratulations! The Savannah Bananas are the baseball team for you:
How exactly did we get to Bananas? The Internet, of course -- the team opened up its naming process to a fan vote, and lo and behold, Bananas was chosen over the likes of Party Animals and Seagulls.
The Bananas will be replacing the Savannah Sand Gnats, a Single-A club that left the city after last season. But the team won't be joining the Minor Leagues -- they'll be playing in the Coastal Plains League, a summer league for college players in the Southeast. There's no word yet, however, on whether Savannah has reached out to Enrique Hernandez about mascot duties.
