Pudge Rodriguez and the Governor of Puerto Rico stumped for Edgar Martinez's Hall of Fame case
There are plenty of fans and writers that love Edgar Martinez and believe he should be in the Hall of Fame. And why not? He hit so well for so long that the annual award for DHs is named after him. (Plus, this photo alone qualifies him for a plaque.)
The man affectionally referred to as 'Gar got a new level of support on Tuesday in the form of Hall of Famer Iván Rodríguez and the Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosselló. That's right: Martinez's case is so strong that politicians are now campaigning on his behalf. Usually it's the other way around.
"We're asking all of you to support him and hopefully we'll be celebrating with Edgar soon," Rosselló said.
"This is his 10th year and I think this is going to be the year that Edgar goes into 'The Family.' I call it 'The Family' in Cooperstown," Rodríguez added.
While Martinez is entering the final year on the ballot, he came awfully close last year as he fell just 20 votes short of induction. Things are looking good so far: Of the 14 ballots that have been made public so far, Martinez has been listed on every one.
We'll know whether Rosselló and Rodríguez's plea worked when the results are announced on Jan. 22.
