The Mexican Baseball League will have its first female umpire next season
History is set to be made next spring as either Paulina Barajas Castro or Luz Alicia Gordoa Osuna will become the first female umpire in the history of the Triple-A Mexican League.
The umpire-hopefuls were in training from last October at the LMB Academy in El Carmen, Nuevo León, and will be working in the Mexican winter league this offseason to work toward landing one of the regular season spots. In fact, Luz Alicia already made her winter league debut while Paulina Barajas will soon call her first game:
Though no female umpire has called a regular-season MLB game (Pam Postema and Perry Barber called MLB Spring Training games), Jen Pawol is looking to change that. Currently making her way through the Minor Leagues -- as umpires follow a trajectory quite similar to ballplaying prospects -- she made her debut this year in Class A.
