Josh Donaldson rendered baseball gloves obsolete with this barehanded play at third base

According to MLB's Official Baseball Rules, "each fielder, other than the catcher, may use or wear a leather glove" when playing his position. The key word there: May.
Because in the fifth inning of the Blue Jays' 6-0 victory over the Tigers on Friday night, Josh Donaldson all but rendered gloves obsolete.
When Cameron Maybin's grounder took a bounce off third base, Donaldson made the split-second decision to forgo his glove and just use his bare hand to reel it in and launch the ball to first for the third out. The way he leaned into the throw seemed to say, "Glove, what glove?"
And his pitcher was certainly pleased with the result.
"When it hit the bag, you never know what kind of bounce it will get or what kind of hop it's going to take," J.A. Happ told MLB.com's Gregor Chisholm after the game. "I thought I made a good pitch on the changeup. He rolled it over and J.D. made a great play. Luckily it was close enough to him, he barehanded it and made a great throw. That's what you need, plays like that."
And plays like that just might make baseball gloves a little nervous about their job security.
