Jeff Samardzija unleashed a righteous bat flip ... on a ball that hit off the wall

Jeff Samardzija doesn't get too many chances to strut his stuff at the plate. He's not a bad hitter, relatively speaking -- a former star wideout at Notre Dame, he's a great athlete, and we've seen some #PitchersWhoRake potential from him before. Still, when you boast a lifetime slash line of .130/.153/.204, it's appropriate to take advantage of any and all opportunities for celebration.
Which is why, when Samardzija launched a fly ball to deep center field during the Giants' 6-3 win over the D-backs on Sunday, he was determined to make it count. He flipped his bat, he began his trot around the bases -- it was about to be just his fourth career home run, after all. Except, well:
The ball ended up just a little short, bouncing off the top of the wall for a double. Not bad by any means, but a little embarrassing -- and, naturally, Samardzija's teammates let him know about it:
Maybe one more set of curls next time, Shark.
MLB.com's Jonathan Hawthorne talked to Samardzija postgame:
"I'm going to hear about that one for a while. I don't know, when does the ball fly better here, day or night? [laughs] They got me, though. That's OK."
Ty Blach, who homered late last week, gave his take on the moment:
"Bum started laughing so I felt like I needed to make sure Samardzija knew who had the real power. It's all in good fun because I know those guys in BP hit way farther than I can. I figured I would take advantage of the situation while I could."
