Hector Sanchez attempted to frame a pitch in the dirt as a strike but was unsuccessful

In recent years, analysts have begun to recognize the importance of pitch framing as part of a catcher's defensive repertoire. The very best catchers can both gain called strikes for their pitchers on the edges of the zone and prevent pitches in the strike zone from being called balls.
As magical as this skill sounds, there are limits to its application. During Wednesday night's game against the Cardinals, Padres catcher Héctor Sánchez was perhaps overzealous in his desire to get a strike for Dinelson Lamet.

As hockey legend Wayne Gretzky once observed, you miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take. Though Lamet was not awarded a strike after Sanchez's efforts, no one can accuse the latter of not taking a shot.
