90s kids rejoice: Fresno Grizzlies are planning a Good Burger night and Kel Mitchell will be there
"Welcome to Fresno, home of the Good Burger, may I take your order?"
That's apparently going to be the tone of the night on July 7 at Chukchansi Park, home of the Fresno Grizzlies. The Astros' Triple-A affiliate is hosting a themed '90s Night, and for this one they're reaching back into 1997 for some nostalgic fun.
Remember 1997? Leo and Kate dominated movie theaters, Nintendo 64 was the hot gaming console and SNICK was appointment television on Saturday nights, led by the comedic pratfalls of Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell.
One of the duo's most memorable skits, in which Mitchell plays an affable-but-dazed fast food worker named Ed, was fleshed out into a full-length movie, Good Burger. An underrated cinematic achievement, the film managed to feature both Sinbad as a stressed-out teacher, the late, great Abe Vigoda, and an asylum dance sequence with funkmaster George Clinton.
Well, the Grizzlies are hitting up the wayback machine for 90s night … and as their tweet announcing the fun would imply, they're transforming a concession stand into an actual, real Good Burger. Oh, and Mitchell will be there, in person!
Oh, but it gets better. In the Good Burger movie, the titular eatery was a private business. That meant that the sinister, chain fast-food megamart across the street, Mondo Burger, was the enemy. As such, the Grizzlies will wear Good Burger jerseys for 90s night and their opponents, the Reno Aces, will sport Mondo Burger outfits -- and it looks like both will have ketchup and mustard-stained socks, too!
So, if you were a fan of Mitchell, the show, the movie, Nickelodeon, 1997, or Minor League baseball, and if you'll be anywhere remotely close to Fresno in early July, should you miss this event?
We didn't think so.
