Five surprising times Major Leaguers hit three home runs in one game
The BBQ's Best 5 is exactly what it sounds like: Each week, we'll pick a category around the world of baseball and talk about the five best things within that group. Today, we're taking a look at the Best 5 three-homer games in recent history.
Monday's Dodgers-D-backs game gave us one of the biggest individual offensive performances of the 2018 season as outfielder AJ Pollock launched three dingers to help propel Arizona past their NL West rival 8-5. Hitting a single home run in a Major League game is a huge deal on its own, let alone two home runs, but three home runs in one game means the hitter has achieved an unparalleled level of hitting zen. And my goodness, it is fun to watch.
But not all three home run games are the same. Some standout more than others. Today's Best 5 takes a look at our favorite three-dinger games from the last five years.
5. Alex Rodriguez vs. the Twins -- 7/25/15 -- 3-4, 3 HR, 4 RBI
This was the fifth and final 3 HR game of A-Rod's career, as the Yankees slugger notched dingers No. 675, 676 and 677 in this July game against Minnesota just two days before his 40th birthday. Only Sammy Sosa and Johnny Mize had more three-dinger games in their career than Rodriguez, who also had 57 other 2 HR games throughout his illustrious 22-year career.
4. Lucas Duda -- vs. the Padres -- 7/29/17 -- 3-3, 3 HR, BB, 3 RBI
Of the last 100 3-homer games, that dinger-er's team has won 89 times. Unfortunately for Duda, this was one of those unlucky 11 games. The Mets lost 7-3, with their only 3 runs coming on the three Duda solo dingers.
3. Christian Villanueva vs. the Rockies -- 4/3/18 -- 3-3, 3 HR, 5 RBI
Not exactly the center of the NL Rookie of the Year discussion heading into the season, the 26-year-old Padres rookie third baseman loudly made his presence known with this monster game in the first week of the year. Now a full month removed this special night against Colorado, Villanueva is still crushing it to the tune of .321/.411/.692, showing that he's no one-game wonder.
2. Anthony Rendon vs. the Mets -- 4/30/17 -- 6-6, 3 HR, 2B, 10 RBI

The most remarkable part of Rendon's three-dinger performance is that it wasn't even the most impressive part of the box score. There were 14 three-homer games in 2017, but this was the only six-hit game of the season. And, it was one of only two 10 RBI days, alongside Scooter Gennett's legendary four-home run performance. Add that to the ridiculous 23 runs the Nationals scored -- the most by a team since the Rangers dropped 30 on the Orioles back in 2007 -- and you've got a statistical game for the ages.
1. Dioner Navarro vs. the White Sox -- 5/29/13 -- 3-3, 3 HR, 6 RBI

You say a windy May afternoon at Wrigley, we say Navarro was the best hitter on earth for a few hours. Navarro had never even hit two home runs in a game before. In fact, he said afterwards that he hadn't hit more than one home run in a game since Little League. The fact that he managed to hit two from the right side of the plate before sending his third home run onto Sheffield Ave as a left-handed hitter only makes this improbable game all the more remarkable.
