The D-backs opened their season at Chase Field on Sunday with a matchup against their division rivals, the San Francisco Giants -- and, of course, Madison Bumgarner, who was as stifling as ever for most of his afternoon (when he wasn't making history hitting two home runs in support of his own cause.)
In fact, Bumgarner held Arizona hitless until Jeff Mathis hit a one-out triple in the sixth inning, which was basically a preview of what was to come later -- when the D-backs secured the first walk-off win of the young season.
And they did it with two outs and nobody on base! Against the Giants' new closer, Mark Melancon, Mathis (there's that name again!) laced a double, pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso tied the game with a single to right-center and, not to be outdone, Chris Owings dropped in a difference-making single to right field, plating the winning run in the D-backs' 6-5 win and setting off the first excited on-field celebration of 2017 in the process:
And yes, Owings' heroics also resulted in the first post-win celebratory shower of the campaign, too:
So now that the first dramatic comeback and walk-off are out of the way, it's anybody's guess which other firsts might happen next ...
