Very little about the career of Carlos Gomez has been ordinary. He began it as a top prospect with the Mets over a decade ago before getting traded and becoming a bat-flipping, dinger-robbing All-Star in Milwaukee. Several transactions later, and Gomez has found himself right back where he began: Queens.
Gomez's first few games in his return to the Mets have been quiet, but Thursday's 6-4 win over the Nationals was something else. He singled in the fifth, stole second and came around to score the game's first run on a sacrifice fly, but not before losing a shoe en route.
The decisive moment came in the eighth with the Mets now losing, 4-3, after a shocking Nationals rally. Dominic Smith was on second with two outs, and the Nationals elected to have Wander Suero walk Wilson Ramos to face Gomez. That decision did not end well.
The blast was not only a game-changer, but also Gomez's first homer with the Mets since June 25, 2007.
The Mets held on to clinch the sweep after the homer, and they couldn't have been happier for the 33-year-old veteran.
Take a closer look at how Gomez posed after launching that shot.
That is a dude who is dropping salt like Mookie and living his best life. We should all be so lucky.
Live life with the exuberance of Carlos Gomez. You'll be better for it, trust me.
