NEW YORK -- Miguel Andujar, manager Aaron Boone and Didi Gregorius will headline a star-studded lineup at next month's 39th annual Thurman Munson Awards dinner, where the Yankees trio will be honored for their success on the diamond and philanthropic works off the field.
Also in line to receive Munson Awards are 1969 "Miracle Met" Ed Kranepool and two-time New York Giants Super Bowl champion Zak DeOssie. The dinner is scheduled for Feb. 5 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York, and Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay is set to serve as the master of ceremonies.
The Awards and dinner pay homage to the late Yankees captain, whose life was tragically cut short by a plane crash on Aug. 2, 1979.
Preparing to enter his second season as the Yankees' manager, Boone keeps busy away from the ballpark. In recent years, he has been on the board for Chances for Children and has traveled to Haiti with his wife, Laura, to help the hurricane-stricken island, which led to the meeting and adopting of two young boys.
Gregorius has been involved with "Didi's Deeds," visiting children's hospitals and handing out items on the streets of New York. He and Andujar have both participated in the Yankees' annual HOPE Week community outreach efforts.
Former Yankees and Mets World Series champion Darryl Strawberry will present the M. Anthony Fisher Humanitarian Award to Gary L. Green, the chief executive officer of Alliance Baseball LLC. Michael N. Rosen, Senior Counsel, Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP, will receive AHRC NYC Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kranepool will be introduced by his former teammate and World Series hero Ron Swoboda.
The event benefits the AHRC NYC Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that supports programs enabling children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Diana Munson, Thurman's widow, will attend her 39th consecutive benefit. She has been involved since the Awards' inception, helping to raise more than $16 million to support richer, more productive lives for the people AHRC serves.
AHRC NYC is one of the largest organizations of its kind, serving 15,000 children and adults who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries and other disabilities.
