Athletics Stat of the Day: June 2021

July 1st, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the A's this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

June 30: Athletics 3, Rangers 1 -- Mr. 2,000
After appearing in the starting lineup as the designated hitter, Frank Schwindel became the 2,000th player in history to appear in a game for the A's. His first A's hit was a 394-foot two-run homer in the second inning.

June 29: Rangers 5, A's 4 -- Rested, not ready
This was the A's first defeat following an off-day this season. They had been the only team in the Majors without a loss the game after an off-day, building up a record of 9-0 in such contests.

June 27: A's 6, Giants 2 -- Irvin keeps SF at bay
Firing eight scoreless innings on Sunday, Cole Irvin became just the second pitcher to complete eight innings against the Giants this season. Nationals righty Joe Ross was the other pitcher to do it, tossing eight innings against them earlier this month.

June 26: Giants 6, A's 5 (10) -- Chapman delivers late
Matt Chapman continued to be one of baseball's most clutch performers on Saturday night. Breaking a tie game with his two-run blast in the seventh inning, Chapman has now hit 32 homers in the seventh inning of a game or later since 2018, which ranks second-most only to Dodgers star Cody Bellinger (35) over that stretch.

June 25: Giants 2, A's 0 -- Manaea rakes
Sean Manaea picked up two hits in two-at-bats against the Giants on Friday night, becoming the first A's pitcher to record two hits in a game since Homer Bailey, who also had two hits against the Giants on Aug. 14, 2019.

June 24: Athletics 5, Rangers 1 -- Bassitt leads AL in innings
With a seven-inning start on Thursday, Chris Bassitt leads the American League in innings pitched (99 2/3) entering play on Thursday night.

June 23: Rangers 5, A's 3 -- Bolt's big night
With two hits in the A's loss to the Rangers on Wednesday, Skye Bolt recorded the first multi-hit night of his career.

June 22: A's 13, Rangers 6 -- Canha all over the box score
Mark Canha was everywhere in the A's offensive eruption vs. the Rangers, recording three hits, scoring two runs, collecting two RBIs and drawing a walk. It was the fifth time this season that Canha has recorded at least two hits and two runs scored in a single game.

June 21: Rangers 8, Athletics 3 -- Montas stumbles in Texas
Frankie Montas yielded eight earned runs to the Rangers on Monday, the first time he has allowed eight or more runs since August 18, 2020. Interestingly enough, Montas was able to pitch 5 2/3 innings on Monday, but only lasted 1 2/3 innings in that start last season.

June 20: Yankees 2, A's 1 -- First series loss on the road
The A's dropped two of three games against the Yankees in New York with Sunday's defeat, marking their first series loss on the road this year. Oakland had been on a season-opening streak of nine consecutive road series without a loss, the longest such streak in A's history.

June 19: Yankees 7, A's 5 -- Trouble with the long ball
After surrendering a home run on Saturday, Jesús Luzardo became the first pitcher in Oakland history to give up a home run in five straight relief appearances.

June 18: A's 5, Yankees 3 -- Perfect after an off-day
There's often worry that a day off can disrupt a team's flow, but that certainly has not been the case for these A's. Following Friday's victory, the A's are now 9-0 following an off-day this season, remaining as the only undefeated team in baseball in games that follow a day off.

June 16: A's 8, Angels 4 -- An impressive benchmark
After Wednesday's victory, the A's improved to a season-high 16 games above .500. Their record of 43-27 is their best through 70 games since 1990, when they began that season 45-25 before later reaching the World Series that October.

June 15: A's 6, Angels 4 -- Firing on all cylinders
After Tuesday's win, the A's improved to 15 games over .500 with a record of 42-27. They had not been more than 14 games over .500 since finishing the 2019 season at 97-65.

June 14: A's 8, Angels 5 -- Moreland joins 1,000-hit club
Mitch Moreland's single to left in the second inning marked the veteran's 1,000th career hit.

June 13: A's 6, Royals 3 -- Melvin joins elite group
A's manager Bob Melvin reached 1,300 career wins as a manager, becoming the 35th manager in Major League history to do so.

June 12: A's 11, Royals 2 -- Chapman ends a drought
Matt Chapman blasted a solo homer in Saturday's game to snap a career-high stretch of 32 consecutive games without a long ball.

June 11: A's 4, Royals 3 -- Kings of the walk-off
The A's walk-off victory on Friday was their sixth of the season, which leads the Majors. They are also now 6-1 in games when tied after the eighth inning.

June 10: Royals 6, A's 1 -- A rare righty HR for Jed
Jed Lowrie's homer off Mike Minor in Thursday's game was his first off a left-handed pitcher since 2018, during his previous stint with the A's.

June 9: A's 4, D-backs 0 -- A second season series sweep
After completing a two-game sweep of the D-backs, the A's finished 4-0 in their season series against Arizona. This marks the second time the A's have swept a season series from the D-backs, after going 3-0 against them in 2001.

June 8: A's 5, D-backs 2 -- Pinder off the bench
Chad Pinder came off the bench in Tuesday's game and recorded three hits. In doing so, he joined Ossee Schrecongost and Mike Gallego as the only players in A's history with two career three-hit efforts in games they did not start.

June 6: Rockies 3, A's 1 -- Kaprielian's strong start
Through five starts, James Kaprielian has a 3.08 ERA across 26 1/3 innings and has struck out more than a batter per frame, totaling 28 in that span.

June 5: A's 6, Rockies 3 -- Irvin had the goods
Cole Irvin generated 19 called strikes and whiffs with his fastball, the most he's had in a single start in his career.

June 4: A's 9, Rockies 5 -- Road warriors
The A's have averaged eight runs in the first four games of their current road trip after averaging just three runs in their last homestand (which spanned seven games).

June 2: A's 6, Mariners 0 -- Manaea goes distance again
Sean Manaea took sole possession of the Major League lead with two shutouts this season. He tossed a seven-inning shutout in the first game of a doubleheader against the Twins on April 20.

June 1: A's 12, Mariners 6 -- Melvin passes La Russa
A's manager Bob Melvin reached a huge milestone on Tuesday with his 799th win as manager of the A's, surpassing Hall of Famer Tony La Russa for most managerial wins in Oakland history. The franchise record is 3,582 by Connie Mack during his tenure with the Philadelphia Athletics.
