We provide a range of year-round player development programs, featuring open gym sessions and training for ages 5 to 18. Our Academy hosts various clinics and camps aimed at developing participants of all ages and skill levels. Additionally, we offer educational support for the students and families we serve.
Kansas City Urban Youth Academy
Our Mission
The Urban Youth Academy (UYA) empowers Kansas City’s urban youth to unlock their potential and become the leaders of tomorrow through baseball and softball. We are committed to educating our players by surrounding them with coaches, mentors, and role models who can teach them how to play the games of baseball and softball and serve as examples of good citizenship.
Through our athletic-focused training, education, and character development programs, we aim to build a strong foundation for Academy student-athletes. The UYA exists to grow the game within the urban community so youth can succeed on and off the field.
The UYA provides a welcoming space for businesses to host a variety of community events. We have facilitated numerous gatherings, including career fairs, health clinics, meal distributions, and offsite meetings. Some of the organizations we've partnered with include the Heartland Black Chamber, Turn the Page, City Year, 20/20 Leadership, and Operation Breakthrough.

Highlights and Recognitions
2025 Play Ball Weekend
Play Ball Weekend, held June 13–15, was all about bringing the game to our community in unforgettable ways. We kicked off Friday with a youth clinic at the Urban Youth Academy, including a special visit from Royals infielder Tyler Tolbert.
On Saturday, we hosted a clinic at Royals Legacy Field at Primitivo Garcia Elementary. Families then joined us at Kauffman Stadium for a pregame tailgate, an on-field view of batting practice, and the Royals game.
The weekend wrapped on Sunday with an MLB Pitch, Hit & Run competition at the UYA. This skills-based event gave our participants a chance to showcase their abilities, build confidence, and deepen their connection to baseball and softball.
2023 Urban Youth Academy Youth of the Year - Dontaé DaShon Finley
Dontaé DaShon Finley (nicknamed Tator-tot) attends Ruskin High School, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. He is a long-standing member of the Greater Kansas City Boys and Girls Club & the KC Royals Urban Youth Academy. He plays baseball for both these organizations as well as Ruskin High School’ Varsity team. Dontaé primarily plays shortstop but can play multiple positions.
Dontaé is also a percussionist in his high school band and has played on the drum line for the Hickman Mills School District drill team, as well as a volunteer manager for the Ruskin High girl’s softball team.
After high school, Dontaé hopes to be drafted by a MLB team. He plans to earn a split degree in sports medicine & mechanical engineering.
Dontaé was chosen as the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy Youth of the Year because of his immense positivity, commitment to service, and academic excellence.
2024 MLB/USA Softball Elite Development Invitational Representatives
M’kayla Cisneros, Ava Harris, Mandia Bock, Grace Samuels and Alexis Lana have been selected to attend this year’s Elite Development Invitational. This event features intense on-field softball development and gameplay along with various off-field development sessions covering topics such as college recruiting, mental health, and women in sports.
The invitational is coached by current and former USA Softball Women’s National Team athletes, professional softball players, and college coaches. Participants represent some of the top athletes from the MLB Youth Academy and Nike RBI network.
