May 1: INF acquired from Mets for cash
Short, 28, was designated for assignment by New York on Friday after making 10 appearances this year, including three starts at third base. He owns a career .570 OPS with 13 home runs and eight steals in 189 MLB games, and he brings a versatile utility presence with experience at second base, third base and shortstop and even six games in the outfield.

April 30: 1B exits with right wrist contusion
Playing his first game with the Red Sox after being acquired from the Cubs for cash considerations on Saturday, Cooper got smoked on the right wrist by a pitch in the fifth inning on Tuesday night against the Giants and immediately exited the game. After the game, Red Sox manager Alex Cora didn't believe the injury was serious.

"He's doing OK," said Cora after his team's 4-0 win. "Just sore. We'll see where he's at tomorrow. We dodged a bullet there.”

With Triston Casas on the 60-day injured list with torn cartilage in his left ribcage, Boston acquired Cooper to be the primary first baseman for the next few weeks.

April 30: DH to undergo MRI on ailing left hand
Yoshida, who had to exit Sunday night's game against the Cubs after jamming his left hand on a swing, was examined by a hand specialist on Tuesday. Yoshida is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Wednesday. Until the results of that imaging comes in, the Red Sox won't know the severity of the injury. For now, Yoshida is day to day.

April 30: 2B delayed by flu
Grissom would have made his long-awaited debut for the Red Sox on Tuesday, but those plans were scratched when he came down with the flu. The right-handed hitter, acquired in the offseason for Chris Sale, will be the starting second baseman when he is activated.

"Yeah. I talked to him today," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "He doesn't look great. He doesn't feel great. We’ve just got to be patient now. See where we at in a few days."

April 30: LHP acquired from White Sox for cash considerations, optioned to Triple-A Worcester
The Red Sox added some organizational depth on Tuesday by acquiring Horn from the White Sox. The 26-year-old was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Friday after they acquired him in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on Feb. 27. The left-hander owns a 4.60 ERA with 11.54 K/9 in 108 career Minor League games (14 starts), including nine relief appearances with Triple-A Charlotte this season. A Texas native, Horn was originally selected by the White Sox in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

2B (right hamstring strain)
Expected return: Early May
Grissom was expected to make his debut for the Red Sox on April 30, but those plans changed when the second baseman came down with the flu. Grissom went 4-for-4 for Triple-A Worcester on April 28. RHP Nick Pivetta (right elbow flexor strain)
Expected return: May 7 at earliest
After Pivetta was diagnosed with a flexor strain in his right elbow, the Red Sox placed the righty on the injured list, retroactive to April 6. He took a big step toward his return when he threw three innings and 50 pitches in live batting practice at Fenway Park on April 27. The next step is expected to be a Minor League rehab start on or around May 2. Pivetta could be positioned to rejoin the Red Sox during their series in Atlanta from May 7-8. (Last updated: April 28)

RHP (right lat strain)
Expected return: Possibly May 7
Bello was placed on the injured list on April 24, retroactive to April 21. The Red Sox said at the time he would likely serve just the minimum time on the injured list, and things continue to progress in that direction.

"He's feeling great," said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. "[April 27] was his best day, so we've got to map it out, see what we’re going to do. He was very aggressive in his throwing program yesterday, no concerns. I believe he’ll be back sooner than later." (Last updated: April 28)

INF/OF (left wrist sprain)
Expected return: May
Gonzalez was placed on the IL on April 13, retroactive to April 11, with a sprained left wrist. An MRI taken on April 17 showed no structural damage. After nearly two weeks of minimal progress, Gonzalez has finally turned a corner and took some swings in the batting cage on April 27.

"Felt better. Actually took some swings today in the cage," Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. "Feeling a lot better. So that kind of switched." (Last updated: April 27)

RHP (left oblique strain)
Expected return: Some point in May
Whitlock still is waiting for all of the symptoms of his injury to subside. Until that happens, he will only throw off flat ground. The key step will be when he feels well enough to throw off the mound. The righty had a 1-0 record and a 1.96 ERA in four starts before the injury. (Last updated: April 26)

RHP Isaiah Campbell (right shoulder impingement)
Expected return: TBD
The reliever was placed on the 15-day injured list on April 12 with a right shoulder impingement. He is starting to feel better and Red Sox manager Alex Cora said the big righty was playing catch out to 90 feet as of April 24. (Last updated: April 25)

RHP (right hamstring strain)
Expected return:
May at the earliest
Mata came to camp out of options, meaning he needed to earn a spot in the bullpen to avoid being designated for assignment. Instead, he suffered a hamstring strain early in camp and now needs to get healthy before the club can make a decision on his future. Mata is getting closer, as he is throwing bullpens, according to Red Sox manager Alex Cora. (Last updated: April 17)

60-DAY INJURED LIST

1B (torn cartilage in left rib cage)
Expected return: No earlier than June 21
Casas suffered torn cartilage in his left rib cage fouling off a 3-1 pitch on April 20, and he is going to miss a significant portion of time. Doctors told Casas the injury could take anywhere from three to nine weeks to fully heal. Casas had one of the best starts offensively for the Red Sox this season, hitting three doubles and six homers with a .857 OPS in 22 games. He was moved to the 60-day IL on April 27. LHP (left UCL)
Expected Return: 2025

Dr. Keith Meister performed the surgery at Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington. (Last updated: April 10)

RHP (right UCL surgery)
Expected return: Late July/early August
After signing with the Red Sox in February, Hendriks said his goal of coming back from Tommy John surgery would be right around the July 30 Trade Deadline. In Hendricks, who is also signed for next season, Boston will get a reliever who has been dominant in the past. It will be interesting to see how he is utilized in a bullpen that also includes Chris Martin and Kenley Jansen, though both of those pitchers have expiring contracts at the end of the season.
